Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors

An aluminium electrolytic capacitor or ‘electrolytic’ is a polarized capacitor which has a anode made from a metal oxide film that is etched onto a highly polished aluminium foil. The anode layers functions as the dielectric of the capacitors. The capacitor is then sealed inside a highly conductive electrolyte solution commonly known as an electrolyte bath which helps create a seal around the capacitor.

The capacitor’s cathode is a highly conductive material that is connected to the negative lead of the capacitor and is also submerged in the electrolyte bath.

Working Principle

The working principle of aluminium electrolytic capacitor is as follows. When a voltage is applied to the terminals, a current flows through the capacitor and the aluminium foil of the anode reacts with the electrolyte creating a layer of oxide film, which is then used as the dielectric.

The oxide film layer provides good insulation between the anode and the cathode and this prevents the current leakage when a voltage is applied. This layer also ensures that the current flows in the same direction through the capacitor and this minimizes the self-heating effects that can occur in capacitors. The electrolyte also helps to dissipate heat from the components and protect them from corrosion.
