The LT1510CN#PBF is a member of Linear Technology’s family of low voltage battery charger integrated circuits. It is a high performance monolithic step-down DC-DC converter with a built-in PowerPath™ controller. The LT1510CN#PBF is specifically designed to provide a higher charging current than would be obtainable with alternative designs. The LT1510CN#PBF can be used to power a variety of electronic devices from CR2032 coin-cell batteries, from low voltage rechargeable batteries to large capacity lead acid batteries.The LT1510CN#PBF integrates a dual output step-down DC-DC converter, a bidirectional switch and a highly integrated PowerPath controller. It is designed to allow active current limiting, automatic reverse charge disable, input current limit and battery temperature monitoring. The LT1510CN#PBF also features powergood, soft-start, low dropsout and charge status outputs, as well as a low quiescent current in supply and no-load conditions.The LT1510CN#PBF is especially suitable for use in automotive, industrial and consumer applications. The PowerPath controller is used to prevail the load from battery during discharging and to prevent reverse charging during the charging mode.The synchronous DC-DC converter used in the LT1510CN#PBF contains: an internal voltage reference, an oscillator, a driver, power transistors, and a voltage divider. The internal voltage reference works as a feedback to the oscillator, which adjusts the duty cycle of the driver to maintain a constant output voltage. The power transistors act as a bridge between the input voltage and the output voltage. The voltage divider is used to feedback the output voltage to the oscillator to maintain the constant output voltage.The PowerPath controller works by controlling the gate current of the power MOSFETs and allowing current from the battery to flow to load during the discharging phase. During the charging phase, it controls the battery current, limits the input current, and keeps the battery from overcharging or discharging.
