The LT3496EFE, released by Linear Technology, is an integrated power management IC (PMIC) specifically designed to drive LEDs in applications such as backlighting, display control, and lighting instrumentation. It also supports a wide variety of LED loads, from one to ten LEDs in series with a range of forward voltages from 3V to 40V. The LT3496EFE is based on the boost topology. An external N-channel MOSFET is used for power switch with the input voltage, output voltage, & inductor determining the respective duty cycle. In continuous mode, an external resistor can also be used to program the regulation current.
The internal operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) acts as the pulse-width-modulation (PWM) controller. For voltage mode control, the output voltage is sensed and compared to an internal 0.8V reference. Efficiency is improved by changing the oscillator\'s operating frequency based on the current LED output level. This reduces switching losses and the need to control LED current via LED series resistors.
The LT3496EFE also includes an internal temperature-sensing circuit to protect the device from high internal temperatures. The thermal protection disables the output voltage and keeps it disabled until the die temperature cools down to a safe operating level. Additionally, it also has an over-current protection with a threshold of about 700mA and a foldback current limit to minimize the output current under fault conditions.
