DC-DC converters are an important part of power management systems, used to provide voltage regulation and power conversion from one voltage level to another. The LT3640IUFD#PBF is a synchronous buck regulator that provides fast transient response and excellent efficiency for designs requiring up to 12 A of continuous output current. The LT3640IUFD#PBF uses a synchronous buck topology to efficiently convert an input voltage up to 6.75 V to an adjustable output voltage, able to be programmed from 0.58 V to 5.0 V, with up to 12 A of continuous output current. The device features both PFM and automatic PWM Mode Control operation, to provide low quiescent current without compromising light load efficiency, and excellent load and line transient response. Cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shutdown protect the device from overload conditions.
The LT3640IUFD#PBF\'s synchronous buck architecture consists of an input voltage source, a pair of internal MOSFETs connected in a synchronous buck configuration, feedback compensation components, and output protection features. The internal PMOS and NMOS switch is driven by a pulse-width modulated (PWM) amplifier. The PWM signal is generated using a voltage-controlled oscillator, which compares the output voltage to a fraction of the feedback voltage.
When the error amplifier output voltage is greater than the oscillator voltage, the output of the PWM amplifier is low and the PMOS transistor is turned off. The current flowing through the inductor L1 then begins to decrease until the output voltage of the error amplifier is less than the oscillator voltage, at which point the PMOS transistor turns back on, restarting the cycle and energizing inductor L1. This process occurs continuously, resulting in a steady output voltage.
The LT3640IUFD#PBF also integrates several protection features. The circuit includes overtemperature protection and overcurrent protection, along with input overvoltage and undervoltage protection circuitry. In addition, the device includes a high-impedance discharge pin which allows the stored energy in the output capacitor to be safely discharged.
