The LT3667HMSE#PBF is a DC/DC linear/switching step-up bus converter with a wide input voltage range of 3V to 20V and an adjustable output voltage range of 1V to 17V. It is ideal for point-of-load supplies and high-power, low-cost and low-noise applications.The LT3667HMSE#PBF implements combining a linear regulator with a switching regulator in order to improve efficiency while still maintaining good step-up performance. It operates in four different switching modes, including burst modeoperation: PWM, PFM, continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM).Linear Regulator operation of the LT3667HMSE#PBF is based upon a wide voltage range that can achieve conversions from 3V to over 20V output. The voltage is adjusted with a linear regulator, which uses a control loop to adjust the output voltage to achieve a constant output current. The linear regulator employs a low-noise, high-current internal MOSFET and an external voltage sense resistor to keep the output voltage directly proportional to the input voltage.To enable efficient operation and high-power operation for the LT3667HMSE#PBF, a switching regulator is employed. A switch is connected between a power supply and a capacitor, which is set to be switched on and off at a given frequency to draw power from the power supply. This switched power is converted to output voltage through a transformer, inductor and diode. The output voltage can be set by controlling the duty cycle of the switch, which is achieved by regulating the current in the switch. The switching regulator can operate in several different modes, including PWM and PFM.In burst mode operation, the LT3667HMSE#PBF implements a low-noise, low-ripple switching regulator.
