The LTC3727LIGN-1 is a DC-DC switching controller from Linear Technology modern family of DC-DC switching controllers. It is a highly integrated and efficient power solution that supports the entire range of switching-mode power converters. It can be used to implement common switching topologies such as buck, boost, flyback, or any other variations of these topologies. With its high speed, current-mode control loop, it is ideally suited for high performance applications requiring low output ripple and fast transient response.
In applications where space is at a premium and multiple voltage rails are required, the LTC3727LIGN-1 is an ideal choice. Its compact 5.75mm x 4.76mm QFN or 10-Lead MSOP packages make this DC-DC converter controller suitable for many portable devices, automotive applications and other space critical applications.
The LTC3727LIGN-1 includes a variety of integrated functions that simplify the design process and add value to the end product. These functions include a standard voltage-mode control loop, frequency modulation, programmable soft-start, cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal shutdown, external synchronous rectifying and adjustable output voltage by a single resistor divider.
The architecture of LTC3727LIGN-1 is based on a voltage-mode current-mode control topology, to provide highly accurate and fast transient response. The voltage-mode ramp generator is set via the voltage-sense pin and the reference voltage of the error amplifier is set by the output voltage divider. The PWM logic block senses the peak current and compare it with the external current-sense setpoint which is provided from external resistor. The modulation options on the device are Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and Fixed Frequency Variable Pulse-Width (FFVP).
By setting the internal dead-time control, up to 40% of output ripple rejection and up to 96% efficiency can be achieved. With a fixed frequency of 100kHz, switch-node ringing and EMI noise are effectively minimized. Furthermore, the frequency can be easily synchronized with an external clock by using the SYNC pin.
The LTC3727LIGN-1 Device also offers comprehensive protection features, including output over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, input UVLO, and over-temperature protection. Enabling the OVP and OCP features, the device automates the operation of the power supply and provides the desired protection. The device also features adjustable soft-start and fault timeouts, which minimize output overshoot during startup and provide maximum protection to the connected system.
To reduce power losses and increase power density, the LTC3727LIGN-1 provides a low-power sleep mode. When enabled, the device draws only 30uW quiescent current and switches off the power stage. The device also provides an open-drain fault pin which can be used to sense the pre-determined fault condition from the output.
In summary, the LTC3727LIGN-1 is a highly integrated, ultra efficient power solution that supports multiple switching topologies and offers a high current mode control loop.
