The LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF is a current mode, step-down switching controller designed to generate a high efficiency point-of-load power supply. This device utilizes a constant frequency peak current mode architecture, combined with low RDS(on) current sensing MOSFETs, to generate very efficient and compact power supplies. The LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF operates with a single inductor providing continuous electrical output and can be configured as a buck, buck-boost or SEPIC converter.
Design Features
The LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF, as part of PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Controllers, provides four major design features to achieve exceptional efficiency and overall output accuracy. First, it utilizes a wide 4.0V to 42V input voltage range, allowing the LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF to control the step-down, switching of a small single-ended output at low input voltage. The second design feature is the low resistance current sense MOSFETs (RDS(on) = 4mΩ) that minimize power dissipation in lieu of tight load regulation capability. Additionally, the LTS3805IMSE-5#PBF promises high efficiency thanks to its constant frequency peak current mode architecture that enables the controller to achieve fast transient response. Finally, the controller also provides external synchronization using an external voltage or current reference, allowing design optimization for a given application.

Working Principle
The working principle of the LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF is based on a current mode architecture, which ensures a fast transient response compared to other types of switching controllers. As shown in the LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF application circuit, the voltage on the output inductor is sensed by an internal error amplifier, allowing the IC to regulate the output voltage based on a user-selectable reference voltage. The output voltage is also influenced by the output inductor current, which is sensed using a current sense resistor (RSENSE). This sense resistor is powered by a voltage ramp, generated by the LTC3805IMSE-5#PBF which is then compared to a user-selectable current limit level.
