To understand the working principle of a LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF, we can look at its structure and function. Its operate mode is enabled by synchronous rectification, current balancing, and spread spectrum. The main component of the circuit is the P-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (PMOS) and N-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (NMOS), both of which are connected to the regulating element–the LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF. The ON/OFF switch regulates the amount of current passing through the elements producing a regulated output voltage. Both the PMOS and NMOS devices are switched in unison, enabling optimized efficiency and effective current balance. The presence of the spread spectrum oscillator reduces EMI from the switching converter.
The LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF is based on a two-phase, two-switch buck regulator architecture wherein each phase provides one-half of the total output current. The two-phase hybrid regulator ensures current matching, neglectable switching noise and reduced inductor size of the battery charging application in addition to improved load transient response and ripple. This works because each phase operation is independently regulated and can result in increased efficiency by sequencing the output current. By adding a third “phase” and four switches, it can be used in a three-phase buck converter architecture.
The synchronous buck regulator uses the LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF to control the amount of current that flows through the switches during the ON and OFF cycles. To ensure efficient operation, each switch turns ON for a specific amount of time before it will begin to turn OFF. When the switch turns ON, it creates a current pulse, which serves to charge the output capacitor and offers additional output voltage regulation. As more current is required, each switch will turn ON for a longer period of time until the total output current is delivered to the output.
When the output voltage is lower than the VFB voltage, the LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF will turn on more current, and then it will turn off less current until the desired output voltage is reached. If the output voltage is higher than the VFB voltage, the opposite happens; the LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF will turn off more current and will turn on less current until the desired output voltage is reached. The load on the output voltage is what dictates how much current is drawn and whether the current is turned on or off.
The LTC3822EGN-1#TRPBF also provides fault protection. It can detect a OVERTEM range of -20°C to 125°C, UVLO range of 2.5V to 4.15V, plus short-circuit and open-load protection. In addition, the external electronic components of the converter are monitored and protected through a high-bandwidth current-sensing loop for over-current protection.
