The LTC3895IFE#TRPBF is a synchronous step-down switching regulator controller that features internal MOSFET power switches, cycle-by-cycle current limit, and adjustable output voltage and switching frequency. It provides fast transient response, excellent line and load regulation, and a wide input range. The device incorporates a high-performance controller and an integrated high and low-side MOSFET driver designed for driving external N-channel MOSFETs. The switching frequency is adjustable from 200 kHz to 2 MHz, allowing an optimized balance between efficiency and solution footprint.

The LTC3895IFE#TRPBF is ideal for powering low-voltage DSP and microprocessor systems, such as DDR-SDRAM and FPGA, as well as point-of-load applications for FPGA, DSP, ASIC and processor cores, communications, and peripheral power. It is also suitable for load step-up and step-down applications, such as POL, digital RF power amplifiers, MOSFET bias and gate drivers, and Li-Ion battery-powered devices.

Working Principle

The device controls a synchronous buck converter output, which requires an external N-channel MOSFET for the high-side switch, an external N-channel MOSFET for the low-side switch, and a Schottky diode as the catch diode. The LTC3895IFE#TRPBF provides fast, synchronized response in all load conditions due to its advanced, current-mode design. During normal operation, the voltage at the MOSFET’s sources (VL and VR) increases as the load current increases, causing the drain-to-source voltage (VL – VR) to decrease. When the voltage at either MOSFET’s source falls below the undervoltage threshold, the switching is halted and the internal linear regulator takes over.

The LTC3895IFE#TRPBF provides an internal linear regulator that operates with a low dropout voltage and provides a stable output when the externally supplied voltages are above the undervoltage threshold. During power-up and power-down, operation is supervised by a programmable slow start/stop control. An internal voltage reference adjustable by an external resistor ensures accurate regulation under varying input and output conditions.

The LTC3895IFE#TRPBF also provides an internal MOSFET gate driver to facilitate MOSFET switching and the cycle-by-cycle current limiting function to protect the system from output short circuit. The cycle-by-cycle current limit can be programmed by an external resistor to any value within the range of 600 mA to 3.2 A.

The device can be programmed to operate with a synchronous frequency ranging from 200 kHz to 2 MHz, allowing the user to optimize the power efficiency and solution size. In addition, the device provides enable and SYNC inputs to synchronize with external clock signals. The SYNC input can also be used to externally adjust the switching frequency.

The LTC3895IFE#TRPBF also integrates several protection features. It has a programmable soft-start time that allows the user to set the ramp duration from 0 to 24 ms, as well as an Undervoltage Lockout (UVLO) to ensure proper operation of the device during power-up and power-down.

The device also features an Overvoltage Protection (OVP) to safeguard the external MOSFETs and circuitry, and thermal protection to keep the power stage under safe operating conditions. The user can program OVP against overvoltage trips, as well as enable and disable the device.
