LTC4066EPF#TRPBF is a high performance Li-ion linear battery charger and System power-path Manager integrated circuit (IC), part of a power management IC (PMIC) from Linear Technology. Working Principle
A battery management IC controls the charge, discharge and protection of a Li-ion/polymer battery pack by actively controlling the charging current, charging voltage, balancing and protection. The LTC4066EPF#TRPBF supports both constant current/constant voltage (CC-CV) charging and pulse-charging (80mA steps).
Charging begins at room temperature after the power supply has been connected. The IC then regulates the charging current to be less than the programmable input current limit and also limits the input voltage. When in CC-CV mode, the IC decreases the charging current as the battery voltage approaches its full charge voltage.
The LTC4066EPF#TRPBF has an accumulator capacitor designed to reduce input voltage ringing in certain automotive applicaitons. When an input voltage transition occurs, the accumulator capacitor quickly charges up the battery and compensates for the time required to charge.
One of the most important features of the LTC4066EPF#TRPBF is its ability to detect and operate with two-cell battery packs. The IC is able to measure the voltage of each cell and balance the charge to each cell when required. This ensures that each cell is charged properly and prevents overcharging.
The LTC4066EPF#TRPBF also integrates a battery-life monitoring circuit to track the cell and pack temperature. If a cell or pack temperature exceeds the upper and lower limits, the IC will automatically reduce the battery charging or discharging current to protect the pack from over-temperature.
