The LV8740V-TLM-E is a device from the family of PMIC-Motor Drivers, Controllers. It can be used in a variety of applications such as automotive, industrial, and consumer, as well as for medical devices and other specialized applications, due to its versatile feature set and efficient power conversion capabilities.
The LV8740V-TLM-E is equipped with 5 channels of regulation for three-phase brush-less DC (BLDC) motors. It’s a complete high-side and low-side MOSFET driver with PWM and sinusoidal waveform signal generation capability. The device provides outstanding current protection and current limiting abilities to protect the circuit and motor. It also comes with several diagnostic functions, such as flash-fault diagnostics, motor-load monitoring, and fault event signaling.
As for its working principle, the LV8740V-TLM-E operates according to the Variable Reluctance (VR) principle. At the core of a VR motor is a length of wire wrapped around a moving magnet inside a cylindrical stator (the main housing of the motor). As the magnet is moved, the internal rotor turns inside the stator. This induces a voltage in the stator winding, creating current in the winding and an electric field. In order for torque to be generated in the motor, the voltage must be changing in the winding; in other words, the voltage must be pulsed. The LV8740V-TLM-E provides the appropriate signal for the motor.
The device integrates overcurrent protection, undervoltage protection, overvoltage protection, temperature protection, and PWM logic for safety and reliability. Additionally, PMOS MOSFETs with RDS(on) (ON resistance) of 19 mOhm are integrated on the LV8740V-TLM-E, allowing improved power efficiency and thermal safety. The device also supports a wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +125°C).
The LV8740V-TLM-E also offers a number of configurable parameters for tuning the current loop and programmable options for fast response control. With its built-in clock generator, the device can generate 7 User-configurable PWM frequencies ranging from 3.2kHz to 100kHz. In addition, the LV8740V-TLM-E features a selectable sinusoidal waveform mode with adjustable speed and acceleration. In order to adjust the motor speed, the user can program the acceleration and deceleration ramp levels and the maximum output power.
The LV8740V-TLM-E comes in two versions: the FSOP16 (8-pin) and the TSSOP24 package (24-pin). The device is also offered in an automotive grade version (AEC-Q100 qualified) making it suitable for automotive motor control applications.
