The LX7172ISE integrated circuit is a highly efficient step-down DC-DC switching regulator designed to provide a simple and compact solution for high performance, low power, low noise, and low burden applications. The device is able to regulate voltage output up to 24V at up to 4A with a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V in a very small package. The integrated switching regulator is the perfect solution for applications such as FPGA core voltage management, low power clock generators, seed power distribution boards, and point of load power distribution.

Working Principle

The LX7172ISE DC-DC switching regulator is a minimum on-time current mode step-down regulator which operates using a fixed frequency. The voltage on the LX7172ISE output is controlled by the current through an external resistive feedback network. The device’s optimal operating frequency is member user adjustable with its external resistor, as well as its minimum on-time with its external capacitor. Internal protection features of the LX7172ISE include under voltage lockout, current limit with foldback, over temperature protection, and short circuit protection.

The LX7172ISE includes both a PWM/PFM circuit for efficient power delivery as well as an adjustable phase spread circuit for extremely low noise operation. The PWM/PFM circuit enables efficiencies of up to 96% over a wide range of load currents while the phase spread circuit provides a wide noise spectrum of 30-65 dBc. The phase spread feature is ideal for applications such as high precision timing or clock skew sensitive applications.

The LX7172ISE also has power sequencing circuits and monitor status signaling that can be used in conjunction with the external control pins. The power sequencing circuits which can be used to turn on and off the output of each individual rail in a user predefined order. The LX7172ISE also includes a monitor status signaling circuit which can be used to signal when the output voltage of one of the multiple output rails has exceeded its predetermined maximum or minimum levels.
