M5KP13A is a bi-directional Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode (TVS), which is used to protect against transient overvoltage and ESD. It provides a relatively wide range of breakdown voltages in a very small surface mount package, as well as ultra-low leakage current for cooling over a wide temperature range.The M5KP13A is a wide working temperature range device, suitable for applications with temperatures from -55 to 175°C and above. The device is also capable of working in a wide range of frequencies, from DC up to 100MHz. It has a very low forward voltage drop, with a maximum voltage drop of 0.55V at 1.0A, and a very fast response time of only 5ns.The main application fields of the M5KP13A are in automotive, industrial, communication, electrical equipment, and consumer electronics applications. It is mainly used to provide protection against ESD, high-intensity electrical pulses, and transient overvoltage; including lightning, EMP, and electrical noise.The M5KP13A is designed with two diodes in series, with both an anode and a cathode connected to each diode. The anode of the first diode is connected to the positive supply line, while the anode of the second diode is connected to the negative supply line. This arrangement allows the two diodes to take turns in clamping the overvoltage spikes, thus providing protection from both positive and negative transient overvoltages.When the voltage on either of the two diodes exceeds its breakdown voltage, the first diode is activated and the voltage on the active diode is clamped to the breakdown voltage. This clamps the overvoltage until the current drops below the holding current, and the device resets. The M5KP13A is designed with a low clamping voltage as the primary feature, allowing it to clamp significant overvoltages with minimal power dissipation. This allows the device to protect sensitive electronics from higher-voltage transient events, while also providing reduced power consumption during operation.In summary, the M5KP13A is a high-performance, bi-directional TVS diode which offers wide temperature operation for automotive, industrial, communication, electrical, and consumer electronics applications.
