The core of the capacitor is composed of a set of two aluminum foils, and the ends of the foils are etched into corrosion-resistant aluminum oxide (Al2O3) film. The oxide film serves as the dielectric layer between the two foils and as the conductor of the electrolyte. The solution filled in the capacitor shell is an electrolyte, which is generally a solution of ethylene glycol in ethylene oxide. The two aluminum foils are respectively connected to the positive and negative poles of the voltage source, and an electric field is generated in the capacitor dielectric layer, which causes the formation of an electric double layer in the interface between the electrolyte and the dielectric layer.The electric field in the capacitor dielectric determines the charge density of the electric double layer, creating an electric current between the two electrodes (the two aluminium foil layers).
