Data Acquisition is a field within electrical engineering involving the reviewing and recording of data. One type of data acquisition for Analog to Digital Conversion (ADC) is the MAX1169CCUD+.
The MAX1169CCUD+ is an integrated sample-and-hold amplifier and Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI®)-compatible ADC with an on-chip voltage reference. It\'s an 18-bit converter with an input voltage range of 0V to 5V. The on-chip voltage reference makes it good for supervisory applications or measurments where accuracy is paramount. The device is small-footprint and operates off a single supply voltage ranging from 2.7V to 3.2V.
The programmable gain amplifier allows up to a 16bit conversion when the gain is set at 256. The low power consumption of the device (less than 700µA of total current consumption at 3V) makes it ideal for portable and battery operated applications. It has a fast conversion time (11µs max) and is self-calibrating.
In terms of external components, the device requires only a few. A 4.7µF tantalum capacitor between REF and GND pins, another 4.7µF capacitor between VS and GND pins, and a 10nF capacitor from the REF-AMP output to GND pins. External reference pins may also be used.
The MAX1169CCUD+ has two single-ended inputs, named AINN and AINP. AINP should always be connected to VDD and AINN to input signal ground. Digital interface pins, CLK, CS, SDI, and SDO, are used for controlling the device. The CLK pin brings the Clock signal provided by the SPI bus to the MAX1169CCUD+.
The CS pin enables the interface to the MAX1169CCUD+. External Clock frequency should be in the range 500kHz - 10MHz. A suitable clock frequency is 1MHz. The CS pin is used to select the MAX1169CCUD+ for communication with the host system.
The SDI pin (serial data input) is used to send 16 bits of control data to the MAX1169CCUD+. During the frame\'s first half (clock cycles 0 to 7), a Start of Frame (SOF) bit is received, followed by an 8-bit device address. The SDI pin is then ignored until the last byte of the frame is received. During the frame\'s second half (clock cycles 8 to 15), a 4-bit parameter is received followed by an 8-bit data word.
The SDO pin (serial data output) is the primary data out of the MAX1169CCUD+. It supplies the 16-bit result of the last conversion cycle. The upper 8 bits of the conversion results are sent during the first half of the frame (clock cycles 0 to 7) and the lower 8 bits during the second half (clock cycles 8 to 15).
The MAX1169CCUD+ is a great tool for easily converting continuous analog signals into digital signals. It is precise, fast, easy to use, and low powered, making the MAX1169CCUD+ well suited for portable applications.
