Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) are used for the purpose of converting analog signals into a digital format. An ADC typically uses a capacitor to store electric charge and a clock to measure time in order to digitize an analog signal. The MAX1242ACSA+ is a high-performance 8-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that offers an advanced suite of features such as sample-and-hold, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), 12-bit resolution, low power consumption and on-chip voltage reference.
The MAX1242ACSA+ is ideal for precision data conversion in many applications, such as test and measurement, automotive, industrial sensor and machine automation, military and aerospace, as well as medical and safety equipment. The MAX1242ACSA+ provides a high level of performance in a very small size and at a low cost.
This device uses a dual sample-and-hold circuit to obtain accurate samples of fast and slow waveforms. The sample rate is adjustable from 100 kHz to 0.2 Hz for the slowest waveforms. The sample-and-hold circuit is also used to convert waveforms with a low duty cycle, such as those produced by Thermocouples, very accurately. The programmable gain amplifier (PGA) provides up to 128x gain, so that it can be used to amplify small signals.
The MAX1242ACSA+ operates in two different modes: the burst mode, where up to 256 conversions can be done continuously; and the single conversion mode, where the ADC will convert one sample at a time. It also features on-chip voltage reference and low-noise discrete capacitors that provide the best performance in its class. The voltage reference is accurate to ±0.12%.
In addition, the MAX1242ACSA+ includes several features that enable easier and more efficient programming. These features include low-power auto-shutdown mode, which saves power by automatically shutting down the device when not in use; high-speed SPI interface, which allows for faster data transmission; and an adjustable tap-delay line, which provides the ability to precisely adjust the timing of the sampling process.
