MAX13103EETL+ is a single-channel, RS-232-to-CMOS-translator IC device manufactured by Maxim Integrated Products. It is primarily used as a logic level translator to convert logic voltage levels from high-voltage RS-232-level signals to Logic-Level CMOS-level signals.MAX13103EETL+ is part of the logic–translation family also known as logic-level shifters and level shifters. This family of devices generates a high level of reliability in the translation of signals. Logic level shifters are used in applications that require an imbalanced or dynamic voltage when communicating between two nodes or devices. Some devices such as, the MAX13103EETL+, are utilized for the purpose of downsizing or reducing the PCB board area of an existing system. The MAX13103EETL+ device operates from a single 2.7V~5.5V supply voltage and includes an integrated, ESD-protection cell that capable of protecting up to 20V from the output of the device. It also features an integrated slew-rate limiter that minimizes EMI and surge current and a power-down mode that reduces the current consumption to under 1µA.The MAX13103EETL+ device consists of an RS-232 receiver and a CMOS receiver. The RS-232 receiver is an analog device that is made up of several components such as an amplifier, filter, and differential receiver. It converts the incoming RS-232 logic level to a high-voltage signal that is compatible with the CMOS receiver. The CMOS receiver then converts the signal to a logic level that is compatible with the CMOS logic.The MAX13103EETL+ device provides a low-current, single-channel RS-232-to-CMOS logic translators with a maximum interference of ±2.5kV. It provides a maximum propagation delay of 14ns from the RS-232 input to CMOS output and a maximum output current of 8mA. The device also features an integrated slew-rate limiter that minimizes the effect of an inductive load on the output.In order for the MAX13103EETL+ device to provide reliable voltage translation between two nodes or components, it must be properly connected and subjected to ESD and surges.
