The MAX14986ETI+T is an advanced signal buffer, repeater, splitter, and amplifier for edge card edge connectors. Specifically, it is utilized within the high-speed PCI Express (PCIe) and SATA (Serial ATA) markets for data plane signal performance in terms of signal integrity, data loss, and bit error rate (BER). The MAX14986ETI+T provides a large signal voltage swing, high-bandwidth, programmable output clamp levels, and adjustable slew rates to meet the requirements of many high-bandwidth applications.
The MAX14986ETI+T, manufactured by Maxim Integrated, is a high-speed, low-power signal buffer, repeater, and splitter specifically designed for edge-card edge connectors. This multi-function device combines driver, receiver and splitter functions with signal buffer and signal conditioning features to provide a total solution for high speed data rate signal delivery. The MAX14986ETI+T signal buffer, repeater, and splitter utilizes an internal pair of identical 100Ω differential drivers, two 100Ω differential receivers, and a logic-controlled signal splitter. The drivers, receivers and splitter provide the highest signal integrity by providing exact cancellation of external electrical noise sources. The drivers output up to 6.0V peak-to-peak differential over-voltage swing for improved signal transmission. The receivers input up to 4.0V peak-to-peak differential over-voltage swing to reject out-of-spec signals and increases signal amplitude when individual lines are reduced in size.
The MAX14986ETI+T also features programmable device settings, such as output slew rate, slew rate transition times, adjustable pulse width, and input signal clamp levels. This enables the buffers to be configured in a manner that optimizes signal signal bandwidth, signal integrity, and capability to resist out of range signals. When the signal voltage changes, the device automatically reconfigures itself quickly responding to signal disturbances.
In addition to the signal buffer, repeater, and splitter functions, the MAX14986ETI+T also provides signal conditioning to reduce electrical noise and crosstalk on signal lines. The device contains a pair of adjustable equalization control pins which allow a signal conditioner to adjust the characteristics of the signal line to reduce reflections, reduce ringing, and increase signal integrity. It also contains two adjustable equalization limiters, which are designed to protect the drivers from transient signals.
The MAX14986ETI+T is ideal for the most demanding edge card edge connector applications, such as gaming and data centers, where signal integrity and signal distortion performance is critical. It is a compact solution that is easy to install.
