Introduction

The MAX15004AAUE+T is a DC/DC switching controller which is programming enabled for wide input supply and output load applications. This device integrates a wide voltage step-down controller, I2C Interface, Linear Regulator and Level Translator. It is offered in a compact 5-pin SOT-23 package and offers low quiescent current and an integrated low RDS(ON) N-channel power switch. It is used as a Li-ion powered system to extend battery life and reduce external component count.

Working Principle

MAX15004AAUE+T works on step down conversion principle of DC/DC converter which uses power switch in the closed loop circuit. The on-chip linear regulator is used to sense and provide voltage references for the DC/DC converter. The current setting is done via an external resistor and can be programmed via I2C Interface for flexibility. The power switch is activated by the Internal Power On Reset (IPOR) circuit which keeps the controller in shutdown mode during startup. The current setting resistor sets the current limit threshold and the switching is enabled during low load operation when the load current drops below the current limit threshold. When a load is applied, the limit comparator senses the load current and enables the power switch to bring the voltage at output side close to the target output voltage. During the current limitation mode, the controller limits the peak current through the power switch to protect the power components. Finally, the output voltage is programmable so that the user can set the desired output voltage via the I2C Interface. The integrated low RDS(ON) N-channel switch provides low on-resistance with minimal switching loss. The 90% high efficiency further ensures minimum power loss and maximizes system battery life.
