The MAX1573TQFNEVKIT Evaluation Board is a reference design for LED drivers. It provides designers with the ability to efficiently drive LED loads up to a max of 2A with a Li-Ion input voltage of 4.2V. The board is designed to run LEDs efficiently with low heating and minimal power loss. It provides a user-programmable dimming range of 40kHz-1MHz, while also allowing designers to use either a 3-wire or 2-wire dimming protocol. The kit includes an integrated selection of components such as a max882CPA+ switches, Current Sense Resistor, Shunt Regulator, and a MAX1573 DC/DC Converter with a high efficiency of 96%.
The MAX1573 is an integrated inductive DC-DC boost converter designed for driving high-efficacy LEDs from Li-Ion or other energy storage sources. Its 12-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter allows for PWM controlled dimming from 40kHz to 1MHz. A voltage reference and programmable power-saving features allows optimized energy utilization for a wide range of LED current levels. The adjustable switching frequency of up to 1MHz and low external component count maximizes design efficiency.The exceptional converter efficiency of up to 96% ensures the efficiency of the entire LED driver application.
The MAX1573 operates as a buck-boost converter, providing the best of both buck and boost converter to charge or discharge the Li-Ion input. Due to its high efficiency, the buck-boost topology ensures a minimum of power loss and heat generation. The internal PWM comparator controls the boost mode switching frequency, allowing scalable operation up to 150kHz. Additionally, max882CPA+ load-switching devices allow simultaneous multiple output loading, as well as an optional load-disconnect feature. This further adds to the flexibility and overall design efficiency.
The operating principle of the MAX1573 is quite simple. In boost mode, the DC/DC converter increases the input voltage from 4.2V to generate the required LED constant current. The output voltage is monitored and regulated by an internal voltage reference and feedback feature. When the input battery voltage drops below the regulation threshold, the converter toggles between buck and boost, varying the output current to maintain a steady output. When the battery voltage is above the regulation threshold, the MAX1573 boosts the voltage to maintain the desired output current, thus preventing the LED from exceeding its specified current. This ability to close the loop between the output voltage and the internal voltage reference, along with the programmable dimming range, allows for the ultimate LED driver solution.
In addition to LED driver applications, the MAX1573 can also be used as a step-up/step-down DC-DC converter for other applications. With up to 70% efficiency over a wide range of input and output voltages, the MAX1573 is a cost-effective solution that can virtually be used in any application requiring a high-efficiency step-up/step-down converter.
