The MAX16020LTET+T is a precision, micro-power supervisor IC with an inbuilt temperature range (T) element and low external component count. It is a highly integrated device that offers two very distinct functionalities. The first functions as an AC-DC supervisor to monitor the power on a single supply system, while the other provides monitoring of time-based events.

Applications Fields

The MAX16020LTET+T is commonly used for monitoring a single supply system & detecting failures, as well as providing safety mechanisms for high/low voltage and over/under current conditions. For instance, it is well suited for many consumer applications such as cell phones, notebooks, portable audio & medical devices.In these types of consumer applications, the MAX16020LTET+T utilizes its precision AC-DC supervisor to detect the presence of a voltage, enabling the user to power the system from the battery or from an adapter. It also includes an overcurrent monitor that serves as a safety mechanism to detect excessive currents, in order to protect both the system and the device itself.The MAX16020LTET+T also provides time-based event monitoring, with a wide range of frequencies for power-up/power-down and reset operations. Some of the more specialized applications for the device include watchdog timers, brown out reset devices and power supply monitoring. Its Reset output has a noise filter that eliminates the need for external RC filters.

Working Principle

The MAX16020LTET+T employs its precision AC-DC supervisor to detect a voltage range of 4V – 15V. It operates in one of two modes: ON detection or OFF detection. In the ON detection mode, the output is set to +Vcc, while in the OFF detection mode the output is set to 0V. The input range is selectable with an external resistor and, as an example, the output can be set to 0V when the input is at 4V or above. This allows interception of low-voltage situations for power-down operations.The overcurrent monitor of the MAX16020LTET+T provides a window of overcurrent protection. This prevents excessive current draw from potentially damaging the system or the device, which can be critical in applications such as medical devices. In these cases, the output is set to +Vcc if it detects an overcurrent between 1A - 20A. The MAX16020LTET+T can also be used for time-based event monitoring. It has a wide range of frequencies for power-up/power-down and reset operations. To controller the reset timeout and frequency, the MAX16020LTET+T has two external capacitor and resistor windows (C1, C2 and R1, R2). This allows configuration of different signals and timeouts, enabling it to support complex monitoring algorithms which require events with different frequencies.
