PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) - Supervisors are circuits which are employed in electronic systems operating at an elevated voltage and current which would otherwise be unsafe for the user. These systems can range from a computer system to an industrial process control system. Supervisors can act as a monitor and controller for power-related operations, so as to protect the device from damage from excessive current, voltage, temperature, or other hazardous conditions. MAX16040PLA29+ is a PMIC - Supervisor which provides protection from over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-temperature. It is an ideal solution for applications where power supply transients must be monitored and controlled more closely.

The MAX16040PLA29+ power supervisor is designed to accept a Pb-free cartridge containing the controller and one of two available channel circuits. The channel portion of the device consists of two independently programmable N-channel MOSFETs designed to control loads up to 25 A. The channel supply voltage, Vcs, can range from 5 V to 30 V, and the channel control voltage, Vcc, can range from 2 V to 5 V. Additionally, the MAX16040PLA29+ provides a programmable reset timer with a time-out range from 10 ms to 10 s. This timer can be programmed in conjunction with a 5 ms to 10 ms detector filter timer to achieve a hybrid, adjustable reset delay.

The supervisor portion of the MAX16040PLA29+ includes all of the functions necessary to control, monitor, and protect a system from over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-temperature. The supply voltage for the supervisor, Vts, ranges from 2.5 V to 5.5 V, and the supervisor threshold voltage, Vtsh, can be programmed from 0.75 V to 3.25 V. The supervisor also features a 4-bit DAC that can be used to generate an adjustable temperature threshold. The supervisor can be put into a low-power sleep state in order to conserve power, and it can be awakened via an external clock or a reset signal.

For applications where a system needs to be protected quickly, the MAX16040PLA29+ also provides two threshold types, a standard threshold and a fast threshold. When a fault condition is detected with the fast threshold, the supervisor will immediately alert the system, without the need for an additional delay. The fast threshold is adjustable from 0.1 V to 1.25 V and can be used for applications such as binding, where fast static and dynamic protection is necessary.

The MAX16040PLA29+ also provides an array of built-in features that make it an ideal choice for embedded and industrial applications. These features include protection against over-temperature and over-voltage conditions, open current-sense protection, and adjustable under-voltage/over-voltage detection. Additionally, the MAX16040PLA29+ offers adjustable deadband and programmable current limit, making it suitable for controlling or protecting a wide range of loads.
