MAX16823ATE/V+T is a LED driver integrated circuit (IC) intended for driving low current LED strings of up to 10 channels. It was primarily designed for use in LED-backlight applications. The device integrates full protection, switching, power and control functions for driving LEDs safely and reliably.
MAX16823ATE/V+T belongs to the Power Management ICs (PMICs) - LED Drivers portfolio, which not only provides lighting solutions for automotive, industrial and general lighting applications, but also offers solutions for battery powered, portable and mobile applications. The portfolio is designed to provide high efficiency solutions, that can drive high levels of brightness with minimal power dissipation. It features digital power, dimming and control solutions, as well as integrated solutions with buck, boost and buck-boost converters for easy design-in.
The MAX16823ATE/V+T was created to address the requirements for driving LED strings in applications from 1-10 channels and provides a high-side current sensing, integrated overvoltage protection, a programmable fixed frequency and low current switching mode. It also implements a smart power-saving feature mechanism to reduce system power requirements.
The MAX16823ATE/V+T features an integrated fault timer that will automatically shut down the LED output in case of an overcurrent fault condition. The device can also be configured to detect overvoltage and undervoltage conditions as well as open and shorted LEDs. It is also equipped with an internal thermal shutdown feature to prevent overheating.
The MAX16823ATE/V+T utilises a constant-on-time (COT) mode of operation. This means that when the device is powered up, the output current is reduced to a low level and then the peak current (Ipeak) is increased. The Ipeak is maintained for a fixed period and then the output is disabled for a fixed period before repeating the cycle; this provides a negative slope for current supply. The COT mode of operation minimises power dissipation and improves system efficiency.
The MAX16823ATE/V+T also includes an internal pre-charge circuit to reduce inrush current and improve system reliability. A programmable discrete output allows for additional control of the IC’s operation, such as implementing a software start-up sequence, dimming or pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming.
The MAX16823ATE/V+T is designed to provide excellent EMI performance and the integrated fault timer allows for the duration of the pulses of the LED string to be limited. This ensures that the overall system EMI will be kept to a minimum while still providing reliable LED string operation.
The MAX16823ATE/V+T also features a wide input voltage range of 4.5 – 28V and is able to deliver a maximum output current of 10A. This means that it is suitable for a variety of LED backlight applications.
