Application Field
The MAX16839ATT/V+T LED driver is specially designed for lighting applications and delivers precise current regulation from supplies down to 4.5V .The device also delivers active current balance across eight outputs, providing improved uniformity for many RGB and RGBW (Red, Green, Blue and White) lighting applications. The drivable current range is from 1mA up to 25mA, providing the flexibility to address a wide range of LED load conditions. The device also features thermally enhanced packages, making it ideally suited for thermal-sensitive locations and other limited space applications. It is particularly well suited for architectural lighting, medical lighting, gas and transportation applications, small displays, and low-current general lighting.
The device also has an integrated thermal foldback protection to prevent excessive device temperature rises. This feature helps to increase the lifetime of the LEDs and the device itself. Additionally, the MAX16839ATT/V+T provides adjustable 8-bit dimming control with an extended range and pulse-width modulation(PWM).
Working Principle
The MAX16839ATT/V+T LED driver integrates a variable current regulator and an active current balancing feature. The device operates with a supply voltage of 3.3 V to 12V, but for most applications the device is used with a 4.5V supply. The target LED current is set by the external sense resistors RSNS1-RSNS8. Each LED current depends on the resistance value of the resistor.
The LED drivers feature a variable current regulator, which utilises an external voltage reference (VREF) and a precision-programmable feedback network (FB) to regulate the LED current. The variable current regulator offers a wide range of possible LED current levels, with a maximum current level of 25mA. The device also includes an active current balancing feature, which ensures that all eight outputs operate at the same current level.
The device features an open-drain P-Channel MOSFET switch and a current-limited PWM logic input. The internal regulator regulates the output current to the selected level and compensates for variations in the LED forward voltage. The feedback network (FB) controls the regulation loop, ensuring that the current regulation is accurate and fast. The device also has a shunt regulator for thermal and supply current sensing.
