DC-DC Switching Regulators are often used in embedded systems and products that require precise control of a power supply output voltage. The MAX16905AUE/V+ is an integrated step-down switching regulator capable of driving up to 5A of continuous output current and offers programmable output voltage control down to 0.5V. Its low-quiescent current and low-dropout voltage make the device well suited for industrial, communications, automotive, and other applications that require both high accurate output voltage and high current output.

The MAX16905AUE/V+ includes several protection features, such as an overtemperature fault signal, an overtemperature shutdown, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) functions. It ensures safe and reliable operation in harsh applications and during a fault condition.

The MAX16905AUE/V+ operates over a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 24V and provides up to 95% power conversion efficiency. It is rated at ambient temperatures from −40°C to 125°C. The MAX16905AUE/V+ works by using a PWM loop circuit to adjust the current and average output. The PWM pulse width is then varied depending on the feedback voltage, to maintain output voltage regulation. The internal PWM voltage feedback loop forms a voltage difference between the input voltage and the output voltage, thereby controlling the current consumption & output voltage of this switching regulator. The device has an internal switch current limit (ICL) and operates at very low quiescent current, which helps to reduce power consumption.

The 2-phase, direct PWM architecture helps to keep supply voltage ripple to minimal while still providing fast transient response, lower audible noise, and high efficiency. It also eliminates the need for external components such as inductors, current limit resistors and capacitors and reduces system cost, board space and noise efficiency.

The MAX16905AUE/V+ also features soft-start of the power supply output, which helps to avoid output voltage inrush when the device is connected to an unregulated input voltage source. A level shifter is incorporated on the device to allow the selectable use of PWM dimming or a linear dimming interface. The device is available in a small 4mmx4mm QFN package and is RoHS compliant.

The MAX16905AUE/V+ provides a powerful, efficient, and cost-effective solution for modern power supply designs, offering a wide range of features, including an ultra-low dropout voltage, low quiescent current, fast transient response, and adjustable output voltage.
