The MAX16929CGUI/V+ are high-efficiency, synchronous, input voltage buck and boost controllers that support PoL (Power-over-LAN) applications and can provide up to 5A of output current. The regulated output voltage is adjustable from 1.8 V to 24 V and the output voltage is maintained at an accuracy of ±3%. A variety of integrated protection features, including output overvoltage, thermal shutdown, soft-start and half-cycle soft-stop, make these controllers suitable for use in a variety of PoL applications. Developed specifically for PoL applications, the MAX16929CGUI/V+ controllers feature an adjustable phase-shift oscillator, active frequency-jittering and field-programmable operating temperature range. The MAX16929CGUI/V+ has a wide input voltage range of 2.6 V to 24 V, which allows it to be used in a variety of power supply applications.
The MAX16929CGUI/V+ application fields mainly help improve power efficiency, reduce power consumption, increase power density and help customers adhere to the highest standards of safety, quality and reliability. To achieve this, the MAX16929CGUI/V+ controllers have an adjustable phase-shift oscillator, active frequency-jittering and programmable operating temperature range. The working principle of the MAX16929CGUI/V+ is based on the synchronous buck and boost regulator topology. This topology uses two power switches placed in series, combined with a diode, to form a synchronous rectifier, and two inductors. The current through the inductors charges and discharges the output voltage. When the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, the topology is operating in buck mode. When the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the topology is operating in boost mode. The output voltage is regulated by a voltage-mode control loop, which uses the output voltage from an internal or external sense resistor to mediate the charging and discharging of the inductors. An error amplifier senses the output voltage and compares it to a reference voltage. The feedback information produced by the error amplifier is used to control the switching of the converter and regulate the output voltage.
The MAX16929CGUI/V+ controllers can support a wide range of operating conditions, input voltages and output voltages. They feature a synchronous operation, which minimizes switching losses, a wide input voltage range of 2.6 V to 24 V, current-mode control loop, adjustable phase-shift oscillator and active frequency-jittering which help reduce EMI noise.
