MAX1697TEUT+T, as a voltage regulator of device categories, is a DC-DC switch converter in Analog Semiconductor\'s PMIC (Power management and integrated circuit) product families. It is designed to run on one 5V or 3.3V 2-cell Li-Ion battery (or a single 2S Li-Po battery), and is capable of delivering up to 5A output current for charging and powering of electronic systems.

Working Principle

The device is designed in a synchronous buck topology, using a two-phase buck converter with two NMOS transistors. In the two-phase buck converter, both switching channels (A-Channel and B-Channel) are connected to the input and output, with the A-channel connecting to the input and the B-channel connecting to the output. The two NMOS transistors can be alternately switched on and off to control the current flow through them, allowing the output voltage to be adjusted as needed. During the on/off periods, the A-Channel and B-Channel transistors alternate turns, so the output voltage is regulated at predetermined level under MAX1697TEUT+T protocol.

When high-frequency switching is required, the A-Channel and B-Channel transistors can be operated in two modes, PWM (power-wave modulator) and PFM (pulse-frequency-modulator). In PWM mode, the transistors are turned on and off very rapidly, enabling high frequency switching and improved efficiency. In PFM mode, the transistors are switched in a slow, pulse-modulation pattern, providing improved noise immunity.

The device features an external failsafe output feature to protect against overload or short-circuit conditions. During overload or short-circuit fault, the external failsafe feature will immediately turn off both the A-Channel and B-Channel transistors, reducing the output voltage to a safe level.

MAX1697TEUT+T also provides under voltage protection, over voltage protection and thermal overload protection. The under voltage protection feature prevents the transistors from being switched on until the input voltage reaches the predetermined level. The over voltage protection feature prevents the transistor from operating above the predetermined level. Lastly, the thermal overload protection feature prevents the device from overheating, protecting the device from overheating-induced damage.

The device is capable of delivering up to 5A output current, and is able to respond quickly to load changes. Additionally, the device features adjustable voltage ripple and fast transient responses, allowing fast transient load variations. Furthermore, the device has a low-noise operation and high-efficiency design, providing efficient power conversion.
