The MAX16992ATCD/V+ is a fully integrated, step-down voltage regulator with a wide range of applications. It is designed to provide power to electronic systems across a variety of markets – from automotive to communications, industrial, medical and consumer. This voltage regulator offers an easy, cost-efficient solution to power system design, reducing the total parts count and part complexity, therefore offering the potential for higher system performance, higher efficiency, and better reliability.

The MAX16992ATCD/V+ is a high efficiency DC-DC switching regulator controller designed to drive N-channel external MOSFETs to generate a regulated output voltage with current-mode control. It offers flexibility in the choice of external MOSFETs and allows the user to tailor the system design to fit specific requirements. To maintain steady output currents, the controller dynamically and continuously adjusts the peak current limit to maintain the desired output current and to ensure that the MOSFET is not overstressed. To ensure stability and system control, the controller offers output overcurrent protection, and also provides up to 3A of output peak current for rapid load current transitions.

The MAX16992ATCD/V+ offers a variety of features that make it an ideal choice for applications requiring cost-efficient power system design. It operates from a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V, and has an adjustable output voltage range of 0.8V to 1.0V. The controller operates with low quiescent current of just 6.5μA, and is available in a small/low-profile 6-pin SOT-23-6 package.

The controller provides several other features that help improve system accuracy, reliability and performance. It uses a constant off-time mode with fixed frequency operation to modulate the duty cycle according to the output voltage. The built-in oscillator supports high frequency operations up to 1MHz, allowing for low ripple and fast transient response. It provides a 12:1 maximum duty cycle range for flexibility in controlling the output voltage. The controller also offers a fast line-feedback loop to sense the output voltage and regulate the output voltage precisely.

In addition to providing improved accuracy in the output voltage, the controller also provides other features that help enhance the overall system design. It includes an accurate delayed-start circuit to protect the external MOSFETs from over-stressing during heavy loads inrush currents. It also offers on-chip undervoltage lockout (UVLO) with hysteresis for both the input and the output, to protect the system from operating at low input voltages or low output voltages. The controller also offers cycle-skipping and pre-bias start-up to provide high efficiency at light loads. The user can also select wider or narrower frequency ranges to achieve the desired efficiency.

The MAX16992ATCD/V+ is ideal for applications such as powering white LED backlighting, system core supplies, and digital audio applications. It can be used in general power system design in automotive, communications, industrial, medical and consumer markets.
