MAX17036GTL+ is an advanced, feature-rich fuel gauge IC designed for use in handheld consumer electronics and other portable battery-powered applications (PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Special Purpose). The device is based on the patented ModelGauge m5 EZ algorithm which integrates several innovative features giving system designers greater flexibility and improved accuracy in their space-constrained designs. MAX17036GTL+ provides voltage, temperature, current and state-of-charge (SOC) measurements as well as accurate remaining capacity estimates. It also requires minimal external components to achieve over 10 percent SOC accuracy across the full temperature range.
The MAX17036GTL+ combines a 12-bit ADC and a small gauge microcontroller in a single package, allowing a single component to deliver high-resolution ADC measurements while managing the system’s battery state-of-charge. This combination of features, coupled with the ModelGauge m5 EZ algorithm, provides greater protection, accuracy and power savings for battery-powered portable designs. The device is designed for compatibility with various battery chemistries, including Li-ion and Li-ion Polymer. It is also fully compliant with IEC-62133, UN-38.3 and UL-1642 safety regulations.
MAX17036GTL+ works as follows. A battery connection is detected to determine the exact type and size, allowing the system to adjust the readings accordingly. Then, the ModelGauge m5 EZ battery model monitors battery voltage and current measurements, calculates the SOC and allows an external battery temperature measurement channel for increased accuracy. The MAX17036GTL+ allows for extrapolation of unused capacity remaining, with an accuracy of over 10 percent, across the full temperature range.
In addition, the MAX17036GTL+ also provides four external resistors that provide system designers with greater flexibility in configuring features and current monitoring. Furthermore, the chip also features a low-noise differential amplifier (LNDA) to enhance current measurements and meet the high-current battery requirements in certain designs.
To further improve battery life, the MAX17036GTL+ allows system designers to optimize the battery charging and discharging algorithms to maximize the available available capacity. The MAX17036GTL+ also includes integrated safety and protection features, such as cell balancing and cell protection, to help extend the battery life and reduce the risk of damage due to overcharging and undercharging.
