MAX17100ETM+ Application Field and Working Principle
MAX17100ETM+ is a single-cell Li-ion/ Li-polymer LiFePO4 battery charger from Maxim Integrated Company. It is a high performance, PMIC (power management integrated circuit) specialized for charging Li-ion and Li-polymer LiFePO4 batteries. This multipurpose charger offers an efficient step-up/step-down charge architecture, and implements maximum current and end-of-charge voltage regulation. It provides high power, fast charging and wide input voltage range (1.6V to 40V) with a small form factor.

Working Principle
MAX17100ETM+ has a step-up/step-down charge architecture. During charging, first, the charger steps-up input voltage to two times the battery voltage. The stepped-up voltage is regulated to the accurate battery voltage by the linear regulator. Secondly, the charger steps-down the voltage to the charge voltage, ensuring that the battery voltage is equal to the charge voltage at the end of the charging cycle.
At the initial stage of the charging cycle, the charger operates at step-up mode. The onboard PWM controller modifies the duty-cycle to maintain battery voltage according to the set maximum current rating. Once the battery voltage reaches the set point, the charger switches to the step-down mode. The PWM controller adjusts the duty-cycle according to the battery voltage and constant current requirement.
Furthermore, MAX17100ETM+ provides variable charge current and adjustable charge termination voltage. The charge current can be set between 0.125A and 4A. The adjustable termination voltage can be set between 2.6V and 4.8V, allowing the charger to be used in a wide variety of applications. MAX17100ETM+ also features charge timers, over temperature protection and a power-saving mode. This ensures efficient and safe charging.
