MAX17115ETJ+ Application Field and Working Principle

MAX17115ETJ+ is a tiny, low-cost, high-efficiency and single-cell Li-ion/polymer linear charger designed for space-constrained portable applications with high performance requirements. The chip’s power management system with integrated linear charger delivers comprehensive power systems protection and charge control. The chip achieves higher efficiency, improved safety and lower cost.

The MAX17115ETJ+ is built in an 80-pin, 4mmx4mm, 0.4mm pitch, TQFN package. It integrates a wide range of features, including an external power transistors, a 1500kHz buck/boost synchronous converter, P-channel, N- channel, and bidirectional MOSFET drivers, and a programmable exposure timer. Its integrated 200mA/2A charging design provides more robust charging capability for Smartphones, tablets, and other portable electronics. The chip also features an adjustable exposure timer to minimize exposure to high temperature that might occur due to long exposure to the sun, and a battery-protect system to prevent overcharging or discharging of the battery.

Working Principle

The MAX17115ETJ+ is a complete low-cost, high-performance single-cell linear charger that performs all necessary control and safety functions required for safe charging. The integrated linear charger monitors the battery voltage, current, temperature and capacity for safe charging. The monitoring and charging are integrated in the chip without external programming logic, and the system can be operated with a regular 5V power supply.

The charger has two programmable operating modes: constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC). The battery is charging in the constant voltage mode until the charge current is below the programmed current limit (CC). Then it switches to the constant current mode until the programmed battery voltage limit is reached, after which the charge termination is considered complete. The battery is protected from overcharging (battery depleted) or over-discharging (battery missing) by two adjustable cut-off levels. The chip also integrates an exposure timer, enabling the user to set the exposure time to minimize exposure to high temperature that can be caused by long exposure to the sun. The chip has a wide input voltage range from 2.5V to 7V, allowing flexibility for various power sources such as USB, DC adapter and solar panel.
