Working Principle

The MAX1818EU T50+ LDO voltage regulator is designed to step-down input voltages from 3V to 6V to output voltages ranging from 0.8V to 5.5V with very high precision. The output voltage is determined by an external feedback resistive network connected between the VFB and GND connections. This resistive network sets the reference voltage between VFB and GND. A 3.0V to 6.0V voltage with good linearity can be obtained in the presence of load and line variations when the VFB pin is connected to the output through a resistor divider network.

The resistive network, composed of R1 and R2 ensures that a predetermined voltage will be present on the VFB pin. If the output voltage tends to increase due to an increase in load current, the voltage at VFB pin also increases, which causes the internal error amplifier to turn on the series pass transistor and reduce the output voltage to the predetermined level.

The MAX1818EU T50+ also provides reverse current–sense protection. In the event of a short-circuit away from the output terminal, a negative current will be sensed by this sense circuit. When the negative current exceeds 0.2A, the output will be pulled low.
