The MAX1844ETP+T is a member of the DC-DC switching controllers family, which belongs to PMIC (Power Management ICs) and Voltage Regulators. This device is an integrated switch controller and synchronous rectifier (SR) gate driver. It works with an external high side power switch and low side SR FET for providing fault protection and step-down power conversion. The first part of the article will discuss the applications of MAX1844ETP+T and the second part will focus on its working principle.

Applications of MAX1844ETP+T

The MAX1844ETP+T is suitable for applications of high current, high efficiency 3.5MHz fixed frequency, step-down converter and low EMI designs. Owing to its integrated SR, the MAX1844ETP+T is particularly suitable for driving external SR FETs with gate capacitance up to 20nF. As it has low external component count, it closely resembles the discrete design approach and gives designers more flexibility. This makes it an ideal choice for ultra-efficient power supplies, such as USB chargers, notebook adapters, cable modems and battery-powered systems.

Working Principle of MAX1844ETP+T

The MAX1844ETP+T is designed based on constant frequency, current mode control. It is over-temperature protected and feature internal soft-start, hysteresis starts-up and programmable over-current detection. With its adjustable 0.7 V to 5.5 V input range and 0.8 V to 5.5 V output range, this device can give a maximum output current of 6A. Its switching frequency can be adjusted between 200 kHz to 3.5 MHz through a dedicated pin.

The MAX1844ETP+T has an adjustable current limit, while the output voltage can be regulated between the preset output voltage (Vout) and an adjustable under-voltage lockout (UVLO). The maximum duty cycle of this device is 90%. The MAX1844ETP+T has an internal voltage feedback divider (R1 & R2). When the output voltage drops, the FB voltage drops, the device turns on, and the output voltage is increased until the FB voltage reaches the desired value.

The device also includes an external master enable pin which can be used to turn the device on or off. The MAX1844ETP+T also features built-in discrete output current limit with an adjustable current limit threshold, programmable soft-start, hysteresis start-up and over-current protection.

The MAX1844ETP+T is a very efficient and reliable device with high current handling of up to 6A, a wide range of adjustable output voltage and switching frequency, overload protection and a thermal protection mode. Its simple design and low external component count makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.
