Data Acquisition – Analog Front End (AFE) comprises components used to convert analog signals into digital signals for more accurate and reliable data acquisition. For example, a MAX19700ETM+T is an Analog Front End (AFE) with a current-sense amplifier and a 3- and 4-wire digital temperature sensor circuit. It has been designed for application fields demanding low levels of power and low quiescent current for battery-powered systems.
The MAX19700ETM+T consists of three stages, each of which is dedicated to a specific function. First, the current-sense amplifier operates at micro-amperes to accurately convert the small analog output voltage of the current-sensing resistor (typically 10 mV/A) into a larger digitized signal. Second, the 3- and 4-wire digital / temperature sensor circuit isolates the signal from the direct sensing resistor connection and allows a wider range of thermocouples to be used without adding additional circuitry. Finally, the signal conditioning stage provides the signals with a zero basis and a gain setting.
The current-sense amplifier works by comparing the voltage across the sensing resistor with a reference voltage. The reference voltage is provided by an adjustable resistor, which also sets the gain of the amplifier. Thus, the output of the amplifier is a digital signal proportional to the input voltage. This digital signal is then used to store, display and/or communicate the sensed values.
The digital / temperature sensor circuit also works by comparing a reference voltage with the output of a thermocouple. The reference voltage is provided by a 2-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which also sets the gain of the amplifier and the range of temperatures that can be measured. The amplified signal is then sent to a comparator and the output is used to determine the average temperature of the environment.
The signal conditioning stage, finally, adds the zero-basis with a gain setting. With this universal, low-power, low-quiescent-current AFE, systems developers can accurately monitor battery and thermocouple data, as well as provide alerts on temperature changes and low-voltage levels.
