Working Principle

The MAX202ECPE is an integrated IC (Integrated Circuit) designed to provide voltage translation and signal conversion between two devices operating at different logic levels. It operates over a wide range of operating voltages; from 3V to 18V. The device uses two power supplies. One is connected to the data lines to provide the logic “High” voltage, and the other is connected to the ground reference for the logic “Low” voltage.The MAX202ECPE is a 3-state circuit and includes two power drain transistors to reduce the current consumed by active devices.

In input mode, the MAX202ECPE receives logic signals from the device on the lower voltage side of the board and converts them to a level compatible with the device on the higher voltage side. Similarly, when the MAX202ECPE is in output mode, the received logic signals from the higher voltage side are converted to a level that is compatible with the lower voltage side device.

The MAX202ECPE also has in-built protection functions to protect against any unwanted electrical signals. ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection on all I/O’s prevents damage due to sudden electric shocks while reverse charging protection prevents reverse charge current flow.
