MAX204CWE application field and working principle
Introduction
The MAX204CWE is a quad-channel, low-power RS-485/RS-422 transceiver. The device has four self-timed driver and receiver channels that can withstand up to ±25V. The MAX204CWE operates from a single 3V to 5.5V power supply, making it ideal for battery-powered and 3V systems. The device is offered in a 6-pin SOT-23 package and will perform up to 1.5Mbps over long transmission lines.
Application
The MAX204CWE combines the simplicity and low-power requirements of 3V systems with the robust ESD withstand voltage required for use in harsh environments. This combination makes the device especially suitable for single-PMIC systems with multiple interfaces including CAN, USB, LCD, and audio. The MAX204CWE also features an integrated 9-kV ESD protection so that no external ESD protection circuitry is needed
In addition to its low-power and ESD protection features, the MAX204CWE features an integrated 1/8-unit load receiver, which simplifies the design of RS-485 bus systems. By reducing the number of external components, the MAX204CWE helps save design time and cost. Other applications include lighting control, industrial control systems,, data acquisition systems, and automotive CAN networks.
Working Principle
The MAX204CWE is a quad-channel, voltage-mode, half-duplex transceiver. The device supports two bus modes – differential or single-line – and is controlled by a logic input signal applied to the drivers (DE,RE) and receivers (D,R). When the drivers are enabled, the device can transmit data over four 10-kΩ differential lines. Similarly, when the receivers are enabled, the device can receive data from the differential lines.
The differential voltages on the A and B pins of the MAX204CWE are sensed by a differential receiver and converted to a single-ended logic level. This logic level is then converted to a logic output by a differential to single-ended converter. Finally, the logic level is converted to the desired format and sent to the output of the device.
