The MAX221EAE is an integrated interface driver, receiver, transceiver for bidirectional data communications between full-duplex asynchronous communications systems. With onboard protection against ESD and high voltage transients, the device supports up to three independent RS-232 channels and its auto-directional capability eliminates the need for external transceivers. Receiving data is enabled by the logic high level of the DATA input and is disabled by the logic low level of the same pin. The transceiver features slew-rate limiting to reduce EMI/RFI emissions and for compatibility with slow handshaking systems. Voltage levels are selected by an onboard DIP switch, allowing for compatibility with 5V or 3V logic levels and providing protection against ESD and transient voltage spikes up to ±15kV.

The MAX221EAE features three independent transceiver channels, providing up to six data I/O lines and three chip enable pins. The device is also equipped with a thermal shutdown protection circuit which will protect the device from damage due to excessive temperature.
