The MAX202EEUE is an extended temperature range dual RS-232 transceiver with extremely low power operation. Featuring charge pump circuits and improved C-MOS thresholds, the MAX202EEUE makes possible RS-232 connections between any two machines for applications that were previously out of reach. Its advanced design permits supply voltages from +3.0V to +5.5V on both transmit and receive outputs and with 100kbps data rates in a wide range of temperature conditions. Working Principle

The MAX202EEUE is a dual channel, low-power transceiver suitable for driving and receiving an asynchronous serial data stream in RS-232-compliant systems and applications. It provides full cable-park operation of up to 100 kbps data rate in a wide range of temperature conditions.The MAX202EEUE contains two sets of transceiver circuitry. Each side of the device contains a transmit differential output, and a receive differential input, with associated bias and termination resistors. The MAX202EEUE operates from a single +3V to +5.5V supply and support logic levels from -3V to +3V in each differential pair.The MAX202EEUE also contains two charge pump circuits that generate the required biasing, as well as complementary outputs from the receivers and transmitters to accommodate the relative bias requirements of the different RS-232 transceiver circuits. When driving a pair of transmitters, underlying current sources provide the required idle current direction, the output levels are frozen by making the output high impedance. This feature helps to minimize current dissipation during the quiescent state.A number of features are provided to minimize logic power dissipation, including a low-voltage logic diagnostics port and a low-power shutdown input, both of which can be used in conjunction with external logic to dramatically reduce the overall system power consumption. The MAX202EEUE has also a built-in auto transmission mode, expressed as a time-out. In this mode, a voltage-follower facilitates a direct connection with the output of a user-supplied logic instead of two discrete resistors.
