ADSMAX208ECAG+ is a next-generation CAN physical layer transceiver component from Texas Instruments, broadly used in Industry 4.0 applications. It is a high-speed physical layer transceiver that offers high signal integrity and dependability while complying with ISO 11898-2. As an active member, it can provide link line control and optimizes bus signal waveforms under various conditions. Its main function is to establish an efficient and safe signal transmission network, boost signal integrity and reliability, and provide reliable link layer control for the network.
The MAX208ECAG+ is equipped with a pulse shaper circuit working within the frequency range from DC up to 1 MHz, applying a 1st order low pass filter in order to ensure signal integrity and noise rejection. This voltage controlled pulse shaper circuit includes an adjustable gain which is digitally programmable by means of the Gain Switching Logic pin that enable to adapt the device to different electrical environments, making it extremely flexible for use in automotive systems. It filters out any signals which have too much damping, thus reducing EMI noise.
Another special feature of this physical layer transceiver is that it is designed with dual power supplies (supply voltage range of 4.5 to 5.5 VDC). One is mainly used to power the latching circuit while the other is mainly used to power the shaper circuit. This configuration allows the device to offer high-speed operation, further extending its use cases in more demanding applications.
With the integrated power management, the MAX208ECAG+ also offers smart power management capabilities. It has two dynamic power-down modes: Normal Sleep Mode and Deep Sleep Mode. In the Normal Sleep Mode, power consumption is minimized but the device is still awake and listening for CAN messages. In the Deep Sleep Mode, the chip is completely shut down and consumes zero power. This allows for efficient power management for the device and enables the system to have longer uptimes.
As for its working principles, the MAX208ECAG+ supports four operating modes: Normal, Bus Off, Single-wire, and Silent. In the Normal mode, the driver can provide an output on the CANH and CANL pins, and when receiving will detect the differential signals that are sent from the other device. In Bus Off mode, the device switches off the output stages and turns off the latching circuit, preventing any interference with the bus. In Single-wire mode, the device features pulse-shaping the signal on a single wire, instead of two. Lastly, in the Silent mode, the device will not transmit on the bus even if the signal is present.
MAX208ECAG+ is suitable for industrial applications, automotive multiplex architectures, and networked control systems. As an industry-standard transceiver, it can provide paths to a variety of bus applications, allowing users to quickly insert the solution into their existing system. With its wide operational temperature range and the mentioned features and benefits, it is easy to see why this component is such an important part of the physical layer in Industrial 4.0, especially in applications where robust performance is paramount.
