MAX232ESE+ is a High-Speed RS-232 Transceiver designed to solve the logic-level-conversion problems of RS-232 communications by providing the voltage levels necessary to interface between dual-supply data terminal equipment (DTE) and dual-supply data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). It is a dual channel transceiver suitable for both 3.0 and 5V device designs that operates at data rates up to 232K bits/sec. It is designed to be used in applications such as personal computers, terminals, modems, printers and other RS-232 and modem communications.

Applications Field
MAX232ESE+ can be used in a variety of applications, from consumer electronics to process control. It is commonly used in fields such as industrial automation, home automation, networking, and telecommunication. It is also found in instruments and medical equipment. It is able to communicate bi-directionally with a variety of devices, allowing the users to transfer and receive data from computers, phones, modems, and other serial devices. Working Principle
The transceiver consists of two drivers and two receivers. The drivers are designed to convert TTL level signals to RS-232 standard voltage levels. The receivers convert RS-232 voltage levels into TTL/CMOS compatible input levels. The MAX232ESE+ is designed to be used with both 3V and 5V supply voltages and can operate with communication rates up to 233K bits per second.

The drivers have logic-controlled input pins (TXD and TXCA) that drive the transceivers’ outputs (TXB and TXCB). The drivers’ I/O levels are inverting, so that corresponding logic 0 on the input results in a high voltage output on the corresponding out, and a logic 1 on the input results in a low voltage output on the corresponding out. The TXD input pin is responsible for forward data transmission, while the TXCA pin is responsible for reverse data transmission. The driver inputs can be driven from both TTL/CMOS levels and from opto-couplers.

The MAX232ESE+ receivers are designed to interface with both true and false RS-232 standard level signals. The false signals are commonly used on negative voltage, or power-down, conditions. Each receiver has an input pull-up which is used to keep the inputs stable when not connected to any data line. The receivers have logic controlled input pins (RXD and RXCA) which drive the receivers’ outputs (RXB and RXCB). Similarly to the drivers, the receivers’ I/O levels are inverting, so that a corresponding logic 0 on the input results in a high voltage output on the corresponding out, and a logic 1 on the input results in a low voltage output on the corresponding out.

The MAX232ESE+ supports power down modes for both the transmitters and receivers. The transmitters enter a low-power state when the appropriate enable pins (TXEN and TXE) are high. Similarly, The receivers enter a low-power state when their respective enable pins (RXEN and RXE) are high. When both the transmitters and receivers are enabled and no data activity is present, the devices will enter a “sleep” state and reduce the quiescent supply current significantly.

The MAX232ESE+ has a separate enable pin (RC) for the receivers and an enable pin (TC) for the transmitters that allow for combining of the two enable pins into a single enable signal. The RC and TC pins are connected to each other internally and can be driven from an external signal. The combination of the two enables reduces the number of pins needed for operation as compared to individual enable pins.

The MAX232ESE+ also provides protection for transceiver interfaces. The device includes an overvoltage protection circuit for the transmitters’ outputs which allows for the outputs to survive an accidental overvoltage on the interface bus. The overvoltage protection circuit is designed to clamp any excursions greater than +/-7V on the RS-232 outputs. In addition, the device also includes a short-circuit and reverse-battery protection that allows the device’s protected inputs to withstand these conditions.
