Working Principle of MAX3291CSD+T

When using the device in the current-sourcing mode, this circuitry turns on the upper P-channel MOSFET whenever the digital input voltage is high, and turns on the lower N-channel MOSFET whenever the digital input voltage is low. This causes the currents to swing between a positive level (sourcing current) to a negative level (sinking current). The current swing adjustment circuitry minimizes the power consumption of the device by setting the current level to 20mA or less, depending on the logic state of the digital input.

When the device is not enabled, the outputs remain at the high-impedance state regardless of the input levels. The current-limit function of this device protects the signal line from over-current conditions. Additionally, the device features short-circuit protection to the supply voltage when in the current-sinking mode.
