The MAX5042ATN+T is a Hot Swap controller designed primarily for controlling the removal and insertion of DC/DC converters in a system. This type of Hot Plug controller, also known as an “active in-rush current limiter,” provides regulation of the current and voltage of the component being inserted or removed from a system while providing exceptional reliability and accuracy. The MAX5042ATN+T not only enables hot-swapping of the component but also reduces strain on the motherboard, which could be damaged by the fast in-rush of current.

The MAX5042ATN+T features an integrated MOSFET switch (on a single chip) that provides a low on-resistance path to the load. This eliminates the need for an external power MOSFET which adds cost, complexity, and component height to the system design. The hot-swap controller also provides overcurrent protection (OCP) and reverse current protection (RCP). It has a robust set of programmable output current limiting and thermal protection features that provide the design flexibility to meet most safety and failure modes. An adjustable slew rate feature enables the user to optimize control of the load current and voltage when the component is being inserted or removed.

The internal regulator of the MAX5042ATN+T provides a supply voltage that can be used to power the controller’s internal circuitry, eliminating the need for an external supply. The controller also has a differential input voltage range of +3V to +5.5V, allowing for universal system compatibility and accommodating high-temperature conditions. Also, the controller draw current from the input and output voltage source, reducing the power dissipation within the system and further increasing the efficiency of the design.

The MAX5042ATN+T is designed to provide exceptional performance in both high- and low-current applications. The typical current limit is adjustable from 2A to 300A, and the OCP is adjustable from 2A to 400A.
