The MAX5048BAUT#G16 is a PMIC-Gate Drivers. It is a high-performance gate driver for driving two N-channel MOSFETs and two P-channel MOSFETs with gate-drive voltages from 6V to 20V. As a result, it can deliver high-current, low-impedance gate drives to a variety of loads.

Typical applications of the MAX5048BAUT#G16 include power supplies, battery chargers, OVPs, ESDs, Automotive systems, Digital TV Power supply units, RF communication, and any other series or parallel configurations which require multi-MOSFET high-current, low-impedance gate drives.

The external components of the MAX5048BAUT#G16 include a few capacitors (C3 and C5) and resistors (R2, R3, R4 and R5) to adjust the internal latch time and dead time of the chip. Furthermore, a RC filter can be connected between the input of the driver and the base or gate of the MOSFET in order to filter out high frequency spikes and noise that can affect the operation of the MOSFET.

The main features of the MAX5048BAUT#G16 are its low supply current (1 microampere), adjustable dead times, adjustable propagation delays and its precision control of the turn on and turn off times as fast as 0.6 microseconds.

The internal design of the MAX5048BAUT#G16 comprises two identical driver blocks: one designed to drive both the N-channel MOSFETs and one designed to drive both the P-channel MOSFETs. Each block contains a differential input stage, a push-pull output stage, a sense switch, an overcurrent protection (OCP) block, and a thermal shutdown block.

The differential input stage converts the logic input signal (HIGH or LOW) into a current that is amplified by a factor of 60 in order to drive the MOSFET gates. This stage also contains a controllable dead time generated by two capacitor networks (C4, C7 and C8) which allow both the P-channel and the N-channel MOSFETs to turn off before the other begins to turn on.

The push-pull driver stage contains two output transistors (Q1 and Q2) that provide the high-current, low-impedance gate drive. The sense switch (Q3) allows the driver to sense the voltage on the MOSFET drain and regulate the output so that the drain voltage never exceeds the selected limit.

The overcurrent protection (OCP) block is a gain-controlled error amplifier that monitors the output current. It will shut down the MOSFET if the output current exceeds a predetermined level. The OCP block also has a latch-off feature which prevents the device from restarting after a fault.

The MAX5048BAUT#G16 also contains a thermal shutdown feature that shuts down the output MOSFETs if the junction temperature of the chip exceeds 150°C. This will protect the device from overheating and also protects the application from overcurrents.
