Data acquisition systems play a vital role in the electronics manufacturing industry by providing the ability to measure, analyze and convert various types of analog electrical signals. Digital to Analog Converters (DACs) are essential components for such systems, and one of the popular DACs is the MAX5205ACUB+T.
In medium-precision analog signal applications, the MAX5205ACUB+T offers an ideal solution with excellent voltage accuracy and ultra-low current consumption. MAX5205\'s integrated buffer and low reference current enables it to drive directly into a 10-bit output; it also supports a flexible powering option allowing the use of a single 3-V supply rail or dual 4.5 to 5.5-V rails. The device is available in small 3.0-mm x 3.0-mm, 6-pin TSOT-23 and 8-pin SOIC packages.
Application Field and Working Principle
The MAX5205ACUB+T can be used as a general-purpose digital-to-analog (D/A) converter. It is designed to accept digital input in various formats such as 16-bit and 10-bit-serial data words, CMOS/TTL byte level input, and even I2C. The 12-bit signed output voltage range spans the range from 0.912 to 4.080V, with maximum output accuracy of ±1.3mV and low power consumption (<1.2mW). In addition, the MAX5205ACUB+T also provides enhanced flexibility of mapping external input code to the output voltage range by providing a 12-bit gain adjustment register and a 7-bit register allowing the output voltage to be shifted left or right.
The working principle of the MAX5205ACUB+T circuit is based on a switched-capacitor network connected at the input and the output. Incoming data codes are generated by an on-chip digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from the provided digital data. The voltage gain and offset of the DAC are useradjustable, enabling the device to generate output voltages from -2.05 to +2.05V over a range of code values.
The digital data is received through an I2C bus-very common in data acquisition systems. The data is then latched; the switches enable the DAC to accumulate voltage across the capacitors. The output voltage is then determined by the voltage at the capacitor node, which is determined by the input code.
The MAX5205ACUB+T DAC can be used in a wide variety of applications including medical, lab equipment, industrial and military. It can be used to convert temperature or pressure data into a proportional voltage, or to generate a high-accuracy bipolar voltage to power op-amps and other analog circuitry.
