Maxim IntegrateMAX5909EEE+ hot swap controller is designed for fault-protected application of hot swappable electronic components, such as memory modules, microprocessors, and other devices. The controller provides excellent protection for an electronic component by controlling its VCC rail voltage and current during insertion and removal. It eliminates inrush current and overvoltage faults that may otherwise damage the component.The MAX5909EEE+ has several unique features and capabilities that make it the ideal choice for applications demanding exceptional robustness and protection. The controller includes an active ramp on the VCC rail, providing precise control of the inrush current during component insertion. The active ramp also minimizes voltage overshoot and undervoltage during component removal. The device also includes low-voltage and overcurrent fault flags, allowing the system monitor to detect and respond quickly to system faults.

The controller is available in an 8- and 10-pin TDFN package, with operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. The device provides a maximum VCC voltage range of -4.12{V} to +4.60{V}, and a maximum current level of 6.75{A}. The controller also includes an adjustable current limit setting, and an adjustable voltage ramp rate to control VCC rail voltage.

The device works by monitoring the VCC rail voltage and current levels during component insertion and removal. Upon component insertion, the device initiates an active ramp on the rail to slowly raise the voltage up to its normal operating voltage. This ramp allows for a controlled inrush current flow, preventing any overvoltage or overcurrent faults arising from sudden surges of current. Once the voltage reaches its normal level, the device exits the ramping mode and monitors the voltage and current levels.

If the current reaches an unsafe level, the MAX5909EEE+ will quickly shut off the VCC rail and will enter a fault state. In this state, the controller issues a fault flag that can be monitored by the system monitor, indicating a system fault. The controller also includes an adjustable voltage and current limit settings, allowing the system engineer to optimize performance and protection.
