PMIC (Power Management IC ) is an important category of semiconductor products used widely in many electronic systems. Hot swap controllers are a type of PMIC specially designed to enable safe and reliable power supply system hot swap. The MAX5916AEUI+ is a dual hot swap controller (HSM) with the capability of driving two external N-channel MOSFETs in a high-side configuration to manage power supply hot plugging for two different systems. Working Principle
The MAX5916AEUI+ is a dual Hot swap controller optimized to provide bi-directional current flow in addition to monitoring power supply input voltages. The controller utilises two external N-Channel MOSFETs (1A and 2A) to provide the power switching between the power supply and the attached load. It does this by monitoring the logic signals from the user logic and driving the gate of the two N-Channel MOSFETs. Based on the user logic signals, the controller will either enable or disable the gate of each of the two MOSFETs.
It also provides a number of useful features such as current limit and over temperature shutdown. When the current limit is exceeded, the controller will disable the gate of the current limit MOSFET to protect the load. Additionally, it provides short circuit and over voltage protection.
When the over voltage threshold is exceeded, the controller will disable the gate of the current limit MOSFET and the over temperature will shut off the power to the load. Finally, it also provides a power-on reset (POR) signal to the user logic when the system is powered up.
In addition to these features, the MAX5916AEUI+ also includes a number of pins like NFB, EN etc.. NFB (Negative Feedback). This pin provides the negative feedback for the controller for controlling the output voltage. EN (Enable) pin is used to enable or disable the HotSwap Controller as per user requirement. Other than these two pins, it also has two open drain output pins (FAULT1, FAULT2) which will be actively driven low when Fault is detected.
