PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The MAX5924BEUB+ is a Hot Swap controller (HSC) device comprised of integrated control, protection, and diagnostic functions; making it an effective solution for hot swap applications. It is specifically designed to provide a comprehensive monolithic solution to implement enhanced and safe hot swap insertion and extraction of board-level components. The device supports dual-port isolation with logic signals and DC current up to 15A, plus card-edge protection.

Application Field

The MAX5924BEUB+ provides an excellent hot swap solution and is designed for use in industrial and commercial applications. With its configuration options, like reverse current prevention, board-edge overcurrent protection, and fault detection, it is a practical and economical choice for adding safety to industrial applications.

The device also can provide users with flexible options, like port control and inhibit control, to protect against inrush current and accidental hot insertion, while making it suitable for many AC and DC load hot swap applications. Moreover, it has the capability of interlocking hot swap and extractor card functions, giving the user the ability to use multiple devices in a series connection on the same board.

Working Principle

The MAX5924BEUB+ works by controlling the insertion and extraction of board-level components. After a balanced enable control signal is applied to the device, it will enable the hot swap & removal of load supply within an acceptable time period. The enable control signal can come from either an external port control or an internal inhibit timer.

The device also provides a gate drive circuit which is based on a split rail power supply. It provides a gate drive across both sides of the MOSFET, ensuring balanced operation and low output voltage. Additionally, the gate drive is accompanied by temperature sensing, providing thermal protection against excessive FET temperature.

Internally, the device also monitors load current, fault conditions and the enable signal, making it an important part of load current and fault management. It can detect conditions that may cause damage to the load or the device, but also protects the components from overcurrent. The device can be programmed easily by using the VREF voltage divider or by selecting the IHOT pin reference level.

The MAX5924BEUB+ features wide operating temperature ranges (from -40°C to 125°C) and a guaranteed 9-bit linear ADC resolution for improved accuracy.
