A hot-swap controller is a type of PMIC that can safely and seamlessly manage power rails during removal and insertion of board-mounted components. It is designed to enable seamless hot-swapping of board-mounted components and prevent any damage caused by uncontrolled power surges or inrush currents. The MAX5931BEEP+ has been designed specifically to meet these requirements and offers wide application in a wide range of industries.
The MAX5931BEEP+ is a high-frequency, single-channel, bi-directional MOSFET driver with overvoltage protection (OVP) and over-current protection (OCP) with exceptional flexibility and safety. Its primary function is to enable safe turning on and off of the load so that no short-circuit current, overvoltage and over-current is generated when components are hot swapped. It also provides power rail sequencing, a feature that allows the voltage on the power rail to be controlled automatically and sequentially. This ensures that the connected components are powered up and powered down in a safe and controlled manner, protecting them from any potential damage caused by unregulated power flows and surges.
The MAX5931BEEP+ works in conjunction with an external SenseFET, an FET coupled with an OCSense resistor, to detect the current and voltage. The OCSense resistor senses the voltage drop due to the FET’s dynamic resistance and feeds that signal back to the IC. This provides a basis for DC power rail protection and monitoring, allowing the IC to activate its protection circuitry in the event of any over-voltage or over-current conditions. The OCSense resistor also enables the IC to detect the load shutdown condition. By disconnecting the load, the MAX5931BEEP+ properly turns off the power rail and then signals the shutdown condition. This ensures that no damage is caused due to uncontrolled power flows while hot-swapping components.
The MAX5931BEEP+ offers a wide range of features, including hot-swap protection, power sequencing, rail OVP and OCP. In addition, it has an embedded EEPROM for storing custom configuration settings and a programmable output voltage. It is designed for use with high-voltage systems and can handle output voltages up to 75V. Its low profile outer package measures just 2 x 2 mm, making it ideal for power management in space-limited applications. The MAX5931BEEP+ is also RoHS and Halogen-free compatible and offers a wide operational temperature range of –40°C to +85°C.
