Power management ICs, commonly known as PMICs, have become increasingly important in recent years as they provide a wide range of functions, such as controlling current and voltage, managing battery charging and discharging, and monitoring power system integrity. The MAX5937LCESA+T is a PMIC Hot Swap Controllers device which is designed to enable reliable, high power, thermal controlled, hot-swap applications.

Application Field

The MAX5937LCESA+T PMIC is ideal for hot-swap applications such as hot-swap backplanes, multi-rail power distribution systems, N+1, and redundancy or failover power systems. Working Principle

The MAX5937LCESA+T is a dual channel Hot Swap Controller. Each channel includes a 2/4 phase output stage with integrated thermal protection, and includes a power switch control circuit and a logic control circuit. The power switch control circuit consists of individual channels, which provide current limiting and voltage monitoring. The logic control circuit includes power-up sequencing, startup voltage scaling and fault detection.

In each channel, the power switch control circuit monitors the output voltage and current set-points, and has integrated current-limit protection. When an over-current fault is detected, the power switch control circuit will shut down the channel.

The Hot Swap Controller also includes an integrated thermal protection function. If the temperature exceeds a predefined set-point, the device will shut down the channel. The device\'s over-voltage protection will shut down the channel when the output exceeds its allowable range.

In addition, the MAX5937LCESA+T also includes a power-up sequencing feature, which allows for two user-defined voltage set points for up to four power-up phases. This allows for multiple, non-monotonous power supply profiles, which enables the device to efficiently power up devices with different power requirements.

The MAX5937LCESA+T Hot Swap Controllers provide a robust and cost-effective solution for power management in many applications. It is designed to be reliable and safe with protection functions including current limiting, voltage monitoring, thermal protection and over-voltage protection.
