Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are used in electronic products and systems in order to regulate the power supply to the electronic components and circuits. Power over Ethernet (PoE) controllers are a type of PMIC which are used specifically to manage the power requirements of Ethernet equipment. The PSE controller is programmed to regulate the power output according to the standards for Type 4 and Type 5 PoE, as well as 802.3af/at/bt specifications. The power output is then regulated by the external FET which is used to sense the PD current. The MAX5940AESA+T also provides several protection features such as over-current and short-circuit protection, as well as programmable fault detection and user-configurable power sequencing.
